My project is inspired by the story of a siren. She is often described as beautiful, calm, and gentle, with a soft voice that attracts sailors. She is usually seen by the sea, sitting on rocks, appearing harmless and peaceful. To the sailors, she looks like a beautiful girl singing and inviting them closer.
But this image is not real. Behind her beauty is her true nature, which is dark and dangerous. This contrast is the main idea of my work. From the back, the siren appears graceful and beautiful, representing the image that attracts the sailors. From the front, her true and frightening form is revealed, showing what is hidden beneath the surface.
I created this artwork using the pinch pot ceramic technique. This method allowed me to shape the form slowly and naturally, giving it a soft and organic feeling that connects to the sea. The colors are inspired by the marine environment, such as deep blues, greens, and muted tones, reflecting the calmness of the ocean as well as its hidden danger.
I intentionally hid the facial features so the focus would not be on identity, but on the idea and meaning of the form. By removing clear facial details, the siren becomes a symbol rather than a specific person.Through this work, I explore the idea that appearances can be misleading, and that beauty can sometimes hide danger. The artwork invites the viewer to look beyond what is visible and to think about what may exist beneath the surface.
