Where Thoughts Grow is a ceramic sculpture that explores the inner landscape of the mind and the complex emotions that exist beneath the surface: darkness, tension, and hidden layers. In this piece, I combined three ceramic techniques: coiling, carving, and slab-building, to create one unified artwork that feels organic, layered, and alive. The form begins as a half head, but the inside transforms into a small imaginative world: a pond, a girl looking into it, and several venus flytrap plants surrounding the space. The pond represents the deeper part of the mind, where thoughts, memories, and emotions collect quietly.
The girl gazing into the water symbolizes self-reflection moments when we try to understand ourselves, our feelings, and the reasons behind our thoughts. Around her, the venus flytraps act as both protectors and threats. They are beautiful but dangerous, and for me they represent negative thoughts, fears, and external pressures that can “consume” our energy if we are not aware of them. The colors greens, whites, and hints of red creates a mix of calmness and tension. They reflect how the human mind works: peaceful on the outside, yet full of complicated emotions on the inside.
Above Water, I wanted to show that the mind is a place where emotions grow, shift, and interact. It can be gentle, dangerous, confusing, or comforting all at the same time.
